WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a You Tube video today from Afghanistan, U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, blasted an announcement by the Obama administration that they propose to make deep, wide-spread cuts to the military budget. The announcement comes as over 200,000 servicemen and women are deployed fighting the War On Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. Further, the announcement comes on the heels of the President’s decision to increase troop strength in Afghanistan by 21,000 and while our nation battles the threat of terrorism around the word and an economic recession at home.
“I cannot believe what I heard today,” Senator Inhofe said in a You Tube video posted from Afghanistan. “President Obama is disarming America. Never before has a president so ravaged the military at a time of war.”
“Here in Afghanistan, our brave troops continue to fight while their President guts our military. Our sons and daughters are risking their lives fighting an enemy whose sole purpose is the destruction of our country and our way of life, while their President disarms America. And all this to support his welfare state.
“The brunt of this decision will be felt by our men and women in uniform right here in Afghanistan. At a time when the Obama administration has put forth a budget to disarm America, Congress cannot, and must not simply go along. Congressman Tom Cole and I will work with the House and Senate Armed Services Committees to stop these cuts.”

I cannot believe what I heard today - President Obama is disarming America. Never before has a president so ravaged the military at a time of war.
Here in Afghanistan, our brave troops continue to fight while their President guts our military. Our sons and daughters are risking their lives fighting an enemy whose sole purpose is the destruction of our country and our way of life, while their President disarms America. And all this to support his welfare state.
President Obama’s budget, the largest in the history of America, triples the public debt in 10 years, funding every welfare program imaginable, but cuts funding for our troops in the field during an ongoing war.
Here in Afghanistan, while the war is intensifying and the number of US forces increases at the direction of President Obama, he undercuts those he sends into harm’s way. It is not just unbelievable…it is unconscionable.
Only Congress can stop him from these draconian defense cuts. His budget is expanding the welfare state, gutting the defense modernization, and jeopardizing our national security - all while our troops are here fighting for us.
I don’t blame Secretary Gates, it’s not Secretary Gates, it’s the White House, it’s President Obama, and these men and women in Afghanistan deserve better.
The brunt of this decision will be felt by our men and women in uniform right here in Afghanistan. At a time when the Obama administration has put forth a budget to disarm America, Congress cannot, and must not simply go along. Congressman Tom Cole and I will work with the House and Senate Armed Services Committees to stop these cuts.
