INHOFE UPDATE
October 2003

INHOFE CELEBRATES PASSAGE OF PARTIAL-BIRTH ABORTION BAN
Commends colleagues for prohibition of "barbaric procedure"

Senator Inhofe praised the passage of the Partial Birth Abortion Act of 2003 (S.3) by his colleagues in the Senate in an effort to eliminate this horrendous act. Senator Inhofe has been a long time supporter of a ban on partial-birth abortion, having been an original cosponsor of this type of legislation shortly after coming over from the House to the Senate in the 104th Congress in 1995. The Senate passed the ban by a vote of (64-34), the House (281-142), and the President is expected to sign this act into law in the very near future.

INHOFE HERALDS GOV. LEAVITT CONFIRMATION AS HEAD OF EPA
Leavitt confirms to Inhofe that his first post confirmation visit will be to Tar Creek

President Bush nominated Gov. Mike Leavitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency almost two months ago and just last week he was finally confirmed by the Senate (88-8). "I don't think anyone is surprised by today's vote, as Mike Leavitt is one of the most highly qualified and experienced individuals ever nominated for this job." Inhofe said. "Today's vote confirms what I have been saying about this nomination for some time: that if we could remove partisan presidential politics from the debate, we could show that Mike Leavitt enjoys overwhelming bipartisan support. I think the 88 members of the Senate, Democrats and Republicans, who voted yes today proved that." Senate Democrats had needlessly delayed Leavitt's confirmation for 56 days previous to his successful confirmation vote.
